Originally from Lake Forest, Illinois, Pelinka was a high school All-American and played guard for the 1989 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) champions University of Michigan (UM) Wolverines.

Presented with the Walter Byers Scholarship award for being the top NCAA male student athlete, Pelinka earned a bachelor in business administration and academic honors with a 3.9 grade point average. After graduating from UM, he obtained a juris doctor and began managing sports clients including Laker great Kobe Bryant.
